Computational Gravitational Dynamics with Modern Numerical Accelerators

چکیده
We review the recent optimizations of gravitational N -body kernels for running them on graphics processing units (GPUs), on single hosts and massive parallel platforms. For each of the two main N -body techniques, direct summation and treecodes, we discuss the optimization strategy, which is different for each algorithm. Because both the accuracy as well as the performance characteristics differ, hybridizing the two algorithms is essential when simulating a large N -body system with highdensity structures containing few particles, and with low-density structures containing many particles. We demonstrate how this can be realized by splitting the underlying Hamiltonian, and we subsequently demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the hybrid code by simulating a group of 11 merging galaxies with massive black holes in the nuclei. Keywords—stellar dynamics; galaxy dynamics; supermassive black holes; Tree-code; direct summation; Graphics-processing units; supercomputers.

CFD and dimensionless parameter analysis of Froude number to determine the flow regime over ogee spillways
In this research, the numerical method of computational fluid dynamics and dimensionless parameter of Froude number have been applied to determine the flow regime over ogee spillways.Froude number is a dimensionless dynamic parameter calculated using the square root of the ratio of inertia force and gravitational force. Considering that the study of the regimes of flow over hydraulic structures...
متن کاملThree Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
A full three-dimensional, single phase computational fluid dynamics model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with both the gas distribution flow channels and the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) has been developed. A single set of conservation equations which are valid for the flow channels, gas-diffusion electrodes, catalyst layers, and the membrane region are developed and numer...
متن کاملNumerical Relativity
Solutions to Einstein’s equations of general relativity describe, among other things, the generation and propagation of gravitational waves. Interest in numerical relativity has been bolstered by the recent construction of gravitational wave observatories such as LIGO (the Laser Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory). This NSF-supported project consists of two observatories (near Hanfo...
متن کاملExperimental study and application of computational fluid dynamics on the prediction of air velocity and temperature in a ventilated chamber
The shape of the air flow in the interior is heavily influenced by the air distribution system and the way air enters and exits. By numerically simulating flow by computational fluid dynamics, one can determine the flow pattern and temperature distribution and, with the help of the results, provide an optimal design of the air conditioning system. In this study, a chamber was first constructed ...
متن کاملCFD Investigation of Gravitational Sedimentation Effect on Heat Transfer of a Nano-Ferrofluid
In the present attempt, flow behavior and thermal convection of one type of nanofluids in a disc geometry was investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Influence of gravity induced sedimentation also has been studied. The commercial software, Fluent 6.2, has been employed to solve the governing equations. A user defined function was added to apply a uniform external ma...
